Rainy Day / by Karen Matheis

In my studio painting on a rainy May day.  My cat is by my side watching me.  The rain is coming down steady, and there is a gentle thunder. Listening to "Kind of Blue."

Thinking about spontaneity in a gesture line.  My favorite lines are not planned or calculated. This type of mark making in a painting is similar to musicians playing a live set. Imperfections are part of the beauty, such as when paint drips or brushstrokes revealed.

The beauty in "Kind of Blue" is due in part because the musicians are improvising during the studio session.  A strategic move of Davis, the recording was created with little preparation or rehearsal.
